This basilica was built by Diego Martínez Ponce de Urrana, from Requena, starting in 1653, to house the image of the Virgen de los Desamparados, patron saint of Valencia. The oval plan contained in a rectangle is related to the church of Santa Ana de los Palafraneros in Rome, the work of Vignola.

On the right you can see the gallery of arcades of the cathedral (1566), a fully Renaissance construction. Called Obra Nova, it was carried out by Gaspar Gregori and from there, the aristocracy and the religious authorities contemplated the acts that took place in the Plaza de la Virgen. The image of the Virgin of the Forsaken was also venerated here before the construction of its basilica.
